Three Knights Pick Up Conference Honors

Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) Men's and Women's Basketball received recognition by the HBCU Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) this week. The conference office announced Monday that three Knights earned player of the week honors for their performances the week of December 23, 2024 to January 5, 2025. Women's basketball guard Tierra Sylvas was named Offensive Player of the Week. Men's basketball guard Donte Briggs picked up Freshman of the Week, and sophomore forward Jamal Gibson was selected Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week.

 

Sylvas averaged 17.5 points and 4.5 assists in the first two games of the HBCUAC Crossover. She shot 14-for-28 from the field with most of her points coming off midrange jumpers and in the paint. She scored 19 points against Wilberforce University on Friday and provided four assists. Her 16 points and five assists led SUNO to an 85-66 victory over Rust College. Sylvas ranks fourth in the HBCUAC with 3.7 assists per game.

Briggs provided 16 points, five assists, two steals and two rebounds to help the Knights to two victories. He hit key 3-point shots to help them pull away in Friday's victory over Wilberforce University. Briggs shot 50 percent from the field and earned his second weekly award.

 

Gibson claims his seventh and eighth weekly awards with two dominating performances. In two wins this weekend, he dropped 67 points, including a career-high 41 points against Rust College in a 103-90 victory. He scored game-highs in both games. He added four offensive rebounds and four assists. He grabbed 33 defensive rebounds, blocked four shots and stole the ball twice. Gibson leads the nation with 15.3 total rebounds per game and is third with 70 offensive rebounds per game. This is the third time this season Gibson has swept offensive and defensive honors.
