by: Jarrett Hoffman, GCAC Staff Writer
The 2023-2024 season was a season of building for the Southern University at New Orleans women's basketball team, which walked away with some bright spots despite a a few shortcomings.
The Lady Knights finished with a 2-25 overall record including a 2-16 record against Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) opponents.
SUNO's season came to an end in the opening round of the GCAC tournament, where they lost 65-45 to Wiley University.
Despite a less-than-desirable result for their season, the Lady Knights came away with some positive takeaways, namely the play of their dynamic sophomore duo, Jordan Harris and McKenna Harris.
[Jordan] Harris was one of the top scorers in the conference, averaging 17.3 points per game (second in GCAC), connecting on 72 three-pointers (second in GCAC).
Her 17.3 points were a 7.0 point per game improvement over her scoring average from her freshman season, warranting an All-GCAC Second Team selection.
[McKenna] Harris also made the most of her minutes in her sophomore campaign. She averaged 10.5 points per game, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game.
On the defensive end, Aalexuz Bourne made her presence felt, averaging a spectacular 5.6 blocks per game setting a new program record for blocks in a season in just 14 games. This included a monstrous 10-block performance against Fisk which set a new conference record for blocks in a game.
Despite their record, the future is bright for a Lady Knights team stacked with players who could be in for breakout years next season.
