Four Knights Earn All-GCAC Baseball Honors
Southern University at New Orleans baseball players Chase Lovick, Noah Ramirez, D'Eric Shenault, and Kyler Sheppard were honored Thursday by the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference as four of the top players in the conference this year, as nominated and voted by conference coaches. The All-GCAC awards ceremony was held between games on Thursday as part of the 2024 Hope Credit Union Baseball Championship.
Ramirez, Shenault and Sheppard were named to the All-GCAC Second Team, and Lovick picked up All-GCAC First Team honors.
The Knights ended the regular season 12-8 in conference play, and the honors are a testament to the work the team put in during their inaugural season. The GCAC's new kids have made their presence felt and look to build off this year's success.
Ramirez was named to the Second Team as a starting pitcher. He averaged 10 strikeouts per game (sixth in GCAC), allowing just eight extra bases in the conference the entire season. He was third in the conference for walks allowed with 22 on the year. He carried an 3.62 earned run average, while recording 36 strikeouts this season.
Shenault was selected to the Second Team at the shortstop position. He batted .349 against conference opponents, with 22 hits and a .571 slugging percentage. On the field, Shenault was a sharp shooter with a .937 fielding percentage, clocking 32 putouts and 42 assists this year in conference play.
Sheppard rounds out the Knights' Second-Team honorees, selected as one of three outfielders on the team. He leads the conference in stolen bases with 30, having been walked 15 times by GCAC teams. His 26 runs scored is fourth in the GCAC, and he has racked up 22 hits on 64 at bats against conference opponents. Sheppard also fielded at a clip of .955 in conference play.
Lovick represented the Knights as a member of the All-GCAC First Team. He is second in the GCAC for hits with 30, scoring 24 runs on the season. His 19 stolen bases is fourth best in the conference, and he is sixth in the GCAC with an on base percentage of .532. Lovick struck out just seven times all season and clocked a .576 slugging percentage.
