Gibson and Parker Pick Up National Honors for 2023-24 Season
Awards honor HBCU athletics and bands for 2023-2024 school year
Radcliff, KY. [August 13, 2024]– Rice FAME Group proudly announces the 2023-2024 HBCU Makeda Excellence Awards honorees on Tuesday. This prestigious recognition celebrates the exceptional contributions of athletes and coaches from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Among this year's awardees from Southern University at New Orleans are Jamal "Tall" Gibson, who was named Men's Basketball Player of the Year, and Olen Parker, Jr., who was honored as Baseball Coach of the Year. Jamal "Tall" Gibson of Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) has made a remarkable impact in his inaugural college basketball season. Averaging 21.0 points, 15.8 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game, Gibson not only showcased his talent on the court but also set SUNO records for total points (630), rebounds (474), and double-doubles (29). Gibson's accolades include GCAC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, as well as selections to both the NAIA All-American Third Team and the Louisiana Sports Writer Association All-Louisiana Third Team.
Olen Parker, Jr., also from SUNO, has set a new standard in coaching by leading the university's inaugural baseball team to a commendable record of 17-21 overall and 12-8 in the GCAC during their first year of intercollegiate play. Under his guidance, the Knights finished fourth in the regular season and achieved notable victories, including a series win against the 2023 conference tournament champions, Dillard Bleu Devils. Coach Parker's recruitment efforts saw the student-athlete population in the athletic department double, showcasing his commitment to building a strong program.

The HBCU Makeda Excellence Awards, named in honor of Queen Makeda, the legendary Queen of Sheba, aims to uplift and recognize the hard work and achievements of HBCU athletes and bands.
