SUNO Baseball lands two on conference preseason team

NEW ORLEANS [JANAURY 30, 2025] – Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) Baseball's Joey Olveda and Kyler Sheppard were named to the HBCU Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) 2025 Baseball Preseason All-HBCUAC Second Team, the league recently announced. The HBCUAC also released its predicted order of finish for the 2025 campaign. Preseason All-HBCUAC and predicted order of finish are derived from votes by the league's baseball coaches.
Olveda was tabbed Second Team Starting Pitcher and Sheppard Second Team Outfield.
Last season, Olveda went 5-1 in six starts and 10 appearances, ranked second in the conference with a 3.89 earned run average, 16th with 34 strikeouts.
Sheppard was a 2024 Second Team All-Conference and ranked second in the GCAC with 43 stolen bases. He hit .347 with 43 runs and 21 RBI and ranked in the top 10 in runs, triples (4), batting average, and on-base percentage.
SUNO was selected to finish fourth in regular season play. In the inaugural season of the program, the Knights finished 17-21 overall and 12-8 in the conference. Under his guidance, the Knights finished fourth in the regular season and achieved notable victories, including a series win against the 2023 conference tournament champions, Dillard Bleu Devils.
The Knights kick off the 2025 January 31 at the inaugural HBCU Battle of the Divisions. The tournament features teams from the HBCUAC, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA).
