Gibson, Johnson Earn HBCU Athletic Conference Honors
New Orleans, LA [November 5, 2024] — The Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) announced its weekly honors Monday, and two Knights received recognition. Tyrese Johnson was named Freshman of the Week for the second time this season, and Jamal Gibson picked up Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week.
Gibson recorded three double-doubles last week, totaling 54 points and 38 rebounds. His 20 points and 12 rebounds helped the Knights to their first victory of the season, 86-75 over Texas A&M University-San Antonio on Monday. He increased his streak of games with a double-double to 34. He added four steals and a block. Through two weeks, Gibson leads the HBCUAC with 12.5 rebounds per game and is tied for fourth with 18 points per game.
Johnson scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds in three games. Thirteen came in a nonconference game against Talladega College on Saturday when he hit five shots. Through four games he is averaging 7.8 points, three rebounds and 1.5 steals per game.
