Gibson, Smith pick up Conference Honors
November 18, 2024
NEW ORLEANS, La. [November 18, 2024] – Sophomore center Jamal Gibson and freshman forward Erroll Smith received men's basketball conference honors, as announced by the Historically Black Colleges and Universities Athletic Conference (HBCUAC) Monday. Gibson picked up his third consecutive HBCUAC Defensive Player of the Week while Smith was named HBCUAC Freshman of the Week for their performances the week of November 11-17.
Smith was integral in the Knights' win over Philander Smith on Saturday. He grabbed rebounds and hit layups and short-range jumpers in the paint to lift SUNO to a win over the Panthers and led Wiley for most of the game. He had a career-high 75% shooting percentage against Philander Smith and assisted Donte Briggs' 3-pointer that put the Knights up 7-4 over the Panthers, a lead they never let go. With just five minutes to play in the game, Smith grabbed an offensive rebound and assisted another three ball by Briggs' putting the Knights up by nine and keeping the pressure on PSU to fight to come back. His ability to put a body on a defender and his control to tip the ball to himself to grab a rebound proved critical during the Knights' 1-1 record this weekend.
Gibson recorded his 37th and 38th consecutive double-double this weekend against Wiley and Philander Smith. His 16 defensive rebounds came at key moments that helped SUNO keep the lead, even when PSU made runs. Gibson notched 32 total rebounds, 25 of which came on the defensive end this weekend. He was able to tip the ball to teammates to put the Knights back on offense and proved to be a problem for Philander's Raymond Reece, who was held to 13 points. Gibson has set the school record for consecutive double-doubles, and he leads the nation in total rebounds (113), defensive rebounds (81), and rebounds per game (14.1). He had the game-high for defensive rebounds against both Wiley and Philander Smith. He ended the weekend with four blocks and helped the Knights defeat Philander Smith for the first time since February 17, 2018.
