February 17, 2025
NEW ORLEANS [February 17, 2025] - For the 13th time this season, SUNO Men's Basketball standout Jamal Gibson has picked up HBCU Athletic Conference honors. The league announced Monday that Gibson was selected HBCUAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Gibson dominated on the glass in games against Wiley and Philander Smith, picking up his 53rd and 54th consecutive double-double. He posted 21.5 rebounds per game with 14 per game on defense. He added three steals and a blocked shot. As a sophomore, Gibson has amassed 898 total rebounds. He set the single-season rebounding record last year as a freshman with 474 rebounds and is nearing that mark again this year as he approaches 1,000 career rebounds. Gibson eclipsed 1,000 career points in January 2025, becoming the first player in program history to hit the milestone in his sophomore year.
Gibson enters the national voting pool now for NAIA Defensive Player of the Week, which will be announced Tuesday.
