Knights Blue-White Scrimmage Brings Excitement for Upcoming Season
The Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) Knights Volleyball team hosted their annual Blue-White Scrimmage, marking the end of their preseason camp with a thrilling showcase of talent, teamwork, and tenacity. Team White emerged victorious in a closely contested match, but the real win was the energy and support that filled the gymnasium. The scrimmage also served as a fundraiser for the Athletics Million Dollar March Fund, drawing in a vibrant crowd of students, faculty, staff, and community members, all eager to witness the Knights in action.
Led by SUNO alumna Zipporah Washington, the Knights demonstrated significant growth in their play and camaraderie, a promising sign as they approach the upcoming season. Washington, who returned to SUNO midseason in 2023, is now embarking on her first full season as head coach. This season is particularly special for her—this team is entirely hers, built with her recruits, guided by her vision, and driven by her enthusiasm for the sport.
"I am starting to see what we're going to look like this season. My girls played well. They played hard. They played with heart. They played with hustle," Washington shared after the scrimmage. "They play with good habits, so I'm just excited."
The excitement for the upcoming season is palpable, as the Knights' performance in the scrimmage hinted at the potential for a strong campaign ahead. Washington's leadership is already making a profound impact on her student-athletes, fostering a sense of unity and purpose that has not gone unnoticed by the SUNO community.
Adding to the electric atmosphere, #SUNOKNIGHTLIFE was in full effect, with student-athletes from SUNO's three other sports teams showing up to support their volleyball peers. The sense of camaraderie and school spirit was infectious, underscoring the collective commitment to rebuilding a robust and lasting athletics program.
As the Knights prepare for their first home match on Tuesday, August 27, at The Castle, fans are encouraged to come out and support what promises to be an exciting season. The first serve is scheduled for 5 PM CDT, and with the momentum from the Blue-White Scrimmage, the Knights are ready to defend their home court with determination and pride.
